    • R. Nile (ed.), The Australian Legend and its Discontents (Brisbane: University of Queensland Press, 2000). In a focus group survey, when asked to nominate 'unAustralian places', ordinary citizens nominated tourist resorts, ethnic and urban locations - places conceived as counter to traditional bush/rural values and qualities of Australian naturalness. This underlines the common identification of pastoral, outback, and beach landscapes with an imagined 'authentic' Australian identity.

    • J.M. Jacobs, 'Aboriginal Land Rights in Port Augusta', MA thesis, University of Adelaide, South Australia, 1983. Jacobs notes that Kokatha peoples were less affected than neighbouring groups by missions and were thereby able to maintain traditional connections to country over a longer period of time. Disease, harassment and alcohol took their toll and the police made efforts to keep Aboriginal people out of towns and away from the railway line until the 1950s when government policy shifted from separatism to assimilation and integration.

    • note
    • It is interesting to note that concern in regard to Aboriginal people was directed to the Central Aboriginal Reserves rather than to the peoples actually living in the Woomera area. This reflects the separatist policy of the time and the desire to 'protect' traditional Aborigines from European society.

    • The MV Tampa was a Norwegian cargo vessel that rescued a boatload of Afghan asylum seekers heading to Australia from their sinking boat in August 2001. The Tampa then proceeded to the nearest port -Christmas Island - but was refused entry to Australian waters. A stand-off ensued and the Tampa was boarded by armed SAS troops. The situation was finally 'resolved' by the Australian government transporting asylum seekers to Nauru and PNG thereby giving birth to the 'Pacific solution' of offshore extraterritorial detention centres. The incident was also a catalyst for the Australian government to introduce extensive border control legislation.
