    • In Kiswahili the word tajiri (from the Arabic tāǧer and translated as 'trader'), refers to a rich person or someone who engages in commerce (Kamusi ya Kiswahili sanifu 2004). To be a rich person (mtajiri) does not only mean having money but also refers to being rich in social status. • I am aware that this account sounds very essentialized, giving little sense of any dynamics and change overtime. Nevertheless, it is indeed this very essentialized (sometimes rather ideological and romanticized) idea of Swahili culture and identity that sticks out in emic (as well as in a number of epic) perspectives on the subject. Despite this being a construction, it has enormous effects on images of the ideal way of doing things, of how to become and behave as 'a proper Swahili'.

    • This article is based on my PhD research on 'Mobility, Trading Practices and Translocality among the Swahili'. By following a mobile ethnographic approach I explored mobile trading connections and the flows of people, ideas and objects between Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, the Tanzanian interior, Dubai and London trying to tease out their contribution to an understanding of a 'translocal Swahili space'.

    • In this context maskani (generally translated as dwelling place) refers to a place where (young) men meet and hang out. Usually, every young man has 'his' maskani that he visits regularly. But spending a lot of time at a maskani is seen as an expression of having nothing to do, being unemployed, becoming lazy and is sometimes related to an increased consumption of drugs.
