66. Amazonian societies used ground stone axes for clearing forest. Appropriate stone for axes is rare in the Bolivian Amazon and may have been obtained through long distance trade. Most of the stone axes recovered archaeologically are less than 1kg and either flattened teardrop-shaped or Tshaped with nubbins opposite the cutting edge to help secure the blade to a short thick wooden handle. In historical and ethnographic descriptions, small diameter trees were cut waist high from the ground while larger trees with large buttresses were cut by teams of men supported by a scaffold. In summarizing early eyewitness accounts of the Mojo and Baure, Métraux states: "At the end of August they first destroyed the underbrush, and then cut the base of large trees by alternately charring and hamming the wood with stone axes. They waited until a strong wind blew down the undermined trees, or else felled selected trees, which knocked down all the others" [35].
