Efficacy and safety of long-term fluoxetine versus lithium monotherapy of bipolar II disorder: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-substitution study

10.1176/appi.ajp.2009.09020284 20360317 This is the largest study of antidepressant (fluoxetine) monotherapy in the acute and continuation treatment of bipolar II depression. At a dose of fluoxetine of 10 to 50 mg/d, the hypomanic switching rate was similar to that of placebo. Because the sample size was small, it is difficult to draw a firm conclusion.
