    • Note
    • The widths of the Strait of Malacca and the Gulf of Aden vary from 35 to 135 nautical miles (nm) and from 13 to 175 nm, respectively. Clearly, both chokepoints lie within the 'hinterlands' of piracy attacks. As noted by Zogg [62], typical Somali pirates nowadays can sail as far as 250-400nm away from coastlines to launch an attack.

    • Note
    • Of course, this did not imply that maritime terrorism did not exist previously, where terrorist attacks at sea happened frequently since World War II, especially in Europe and the Mediterranean region [91]. However, empirical evidences suggested that maritime terrorism had recently become more increasingly linked together with piracy attacks.

    • Being a 'failed state', however, Somali pirates seldom seized cargoes from hijacked ships due to the lack of supporting public infrastructure and genuine local markets. See for further details.

    • This is an important, but highly sensible, assumption. As argued by Zogg [62], re-routing and international naval presence in the Gulf of Aden might have simply shifted the focus of pirates elsewhere. Indeed, empirical evidence suggests that attacks on ships outside Somalia by Somali pirates had increased since 2007 when several major liner services started to re-route via the Cape of Good Hope. For instance, piracy attacks which took place within countries adjacent to route 2 (Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, South Africa and Tanzania) had increased from eight in 2003 to 18 in 2008 [64].

    • The calculations are based on a basic Far East-Europe service in the Far East via the Suez Canal spending 24 days at sea and 8 days in port. Each ship completes 11.4 voyages per annum. Fuel consumption is based on 22.5 knot service speed which results in Super-Post-Panamax (6000 TEUs) consuming 160 and 6 tpd at sea and in port respectively. Bunker prices are calculated at USD 850.7 per tonne. Canal due is obtained from the Suez Canal Authority [94]. Manning cost is based on the use of competitive international shipping register.
