    • Attempt to synthesize pentasubstituted phenols was unsuccessful. The reaction of 4,4-bis(ethylthio)-1,3-diphenylbut-3-en-2-one, benzaldehyde and acetophenone or the reaction of 4-(bis(ethylthio) methylene)heptane-3,5-dione, benzaldehyde and acetophenone gave a complex mixture of products in which no trace of the desired phenols could be isolated.
