3 (10 mM) was taken in a test tube (internal diameter: 0.8 cm, length: 7.5 cm). Then 200 μL of a solution of sodium cholate (30 mM) was added to it quickly. A white precipitate appeared instantaneously and the mixture turned turbid. On sonication this turbid solution turned into a translucent gel. For more details of the gel formation see ESI

Y. Hasegawa K. Sogabe Y. Wada S. Yanagida J. Lumin. 2003 101 235 Note added in proof: We have now been able to make similar gels with Tb(iii) and mixtures of Tb(iii) and Eu(iii). We have also observed Tb and Tb/Eu luminescence with an appropriate naphthalene-based sensitizer. These results will be published elsewhere.
