    • In a TE10m single mode microwave cavity, it is possible to preferentially select the H field or the E field to irradiate the sample, depending especially on the material absorption mechanisms. Otherwise, in such a cavity, the required amount of power to heat the sample is very low owing to the amplification of the electromagnetic fields provided by the resonance. In a multimode cavity, the electromagnetic fields distribution is averaged in the space and it is difficult to distinguish the contribution on the heating of the H or the E fields. See for example:
