We performed both Job plots and titration experiments (see refs. [3a] and [3b]). The titration approach is much more effective than the Job plot and clearly shows all of the species present in solution, whereas the Job plot reveals only the formation of the major ones

note
-
From our current data, we cannot entirely rule out the possibility of a statistical rather than a stepwise formation of (n+1)/4 assemblies (in which n is the number of porphyrin units present). However, the presence of well-defined break-points and different slopes after each addition step (average 20% shift) suggests that we are dealing with one predominant species per step. More complex equilibria would likely manifest as a straight line from the 1:4 to the 5:4 ratio (i.e., an absence of break-points) because the porphyrin molecules would experience an averaged environment as a result of the simultaneous presence in solution of several assemblies with different stoichiometries.

The formation of the 6:4 and 7:4 species also produces a hypsochromic effect (shift of the Soret maximum from 412 to 400 nm). Soret hypsochromism has recently been observed as a result of porphyrin interactions leading to face-to-face geometries (R. van Hameren, A. M. van Buul, M. A. Castriciano, V. Villari, N. Micali, P. Schön, S. Speller, L. Monsù Scolaro, A. E. Rowan, J. A. A. W. Elemans, R. J. M. Nolte, Nano Lett. 2008, 8, 253 -259)
