The research utilised the company minute books (1853-1903), agreements of reserved grounds, burial records (1854-1905), the secretary's correspondence (1890-1907), newspaper cuttings collected by the company and company brochures. Notwithstanding some potential shortcomings, which are inevitable when dealing with a set of archives that are always going to be partial, the range and depth of the archive material supports a number of important conclusions.
35. I use the term 'alienation' instead of 'exclusion' or 'class segregation' because while these are central to the process of alienation, the latter is more cogent because of its conceptual linkages to modernity.
