    • In Fig. , the SD operator DSD (L/2;L ) for J =0.39 and L=192 is not shown as the DMRG calculation was not stable in this case. We note that this feature can be naturally understood within the VBS picture as the boundary condition with additional edge spins, employed in the calculation of the SD operator, is not compatible with the RS ground state realized at this parameter point. In the RS ground state these additional edge spin-1/2 moments essentially decouple from the bulk and spoil numerical stability of the calculation. Similar effect is well known in the Haldane phase where the free-edge moments are induced in the ladder under the simple open boundary condition. We have observed this phenomenon in the wide range of exchange parameters corresponding to the RS, CD, and Haldane phases.
