    • Strictly speaking, Fourier transformation of the X-ray total scattering data provides the spatial correlation function of the electron density. The PDF between atom centers is not measured in the X-ray scattering experiment in the same way as in a neutron scattering experiment. To account for this, one must "sharpen" the X-ray PDF by scaling the X-ray total scattering function with a Q -dependent function representing the average scattering and then Fourier transforming this scaled scattering function. As a result, we obtain an effective PDF.
