note
-
Lattice defect population depends upon the quenching rate of metals that puts their state far from equilibrium, and properties of quenched samples differ. Concentration of quenched-in vacancies is smaller than that of equilibrium vacancies at higher temperatures. The extra electrical resistivity after quenching is directly related to the vacancy population. The enthalpy stored by the quenched-in vacancies is released during annealing. In Sec. 11 of his review, Kraftmakher (Ref.) has described the relaxation phenomena caused by equilibration of vacancy defects by measuring the electrical resistivity, specific heat and thermal expansivity and has discussed the characteristic time of this spontaneous relaxation. He stated (Ref.): "Such properties are the extra enthalpy, changes in the volume and lattice parameters, the electrical resistivity, thermopower, parameters of the positron annihilation and of the perturbed correlation of the γ -quanta."
