The author discusses the contemporary interpretations of acquired deep dyslexia and compares the results from the performance of dyslexic patients to results from brain-imaging studies. Coltheart concludes that the RH interpretation remains the best explanation of deep dyslexia.
33. Coltheart M. Acquired dyslexias and the computational modeling of reading. Cognitive Neuropsychology 2006, 23:96-109. The author compares and tests two approaches to the computational modeling of reading: the connectionist triangle model and the "dual-route cascaded" (DRC) model. Both computational approaches were tested by damaging the model and testing how well the impaired reading obtained from these lesions simulates the reading impairment seen in acquired surface and phonological dyslexia. The results favor the DRC model. The paper is recommended for readers interested in computational cognitive neuropsychology.

This is a review of the recent functional neuroimaging studies on reading and reading impairments. Results are analyzed in a cognitive neuropsychological frame and in relation to contemporary cognitive dual-route models of reading.

The authors review major reports of patients who have acquired dyslexia and dysgraphia in Chinese and describe the implications of these data for the functional architecture of reading and writing. The authors' conclusion is that the unique features of Chinese script determine the symptoms of acquired dyslexia and dysgraphia in Chinese. It is an excellent review of the acquired impairments of written language in a cognitive neuropsychological frame. The paper (and the entire special issue of which the paper is part) is recommended for those readers who are interested in acquired dyslexia and dysgraphia across scripts.
