The measured S2p XPS signals were normalized to the respective underlying Au4f XPS signals for the quantitative evaluation. Considering the covalent attachment of S to Au, even if there is large difference in the molecular structure and composition (DEDTC and DT), the relative S/Au XPS signal intensity, which is characteristic of the S-Au bond, does not change because the emitted photoelectrons are all affected in the same way. Thus, the relative S/Au XPS signal is a direct measurement of the amount of S on the top of Au, specifically for thiolate and dithiocarbamate SAMs.
