It may be possible to isolate polyrotaxane of 1 with a-CD after photoisomerization by size exclusion chromatography or dialysis. However, it is known that the as-Azo moiety is isomerized back to the trans isomer not only under visible light irradiation but also by a thermal, process. Thus, we would not try to isolate the polyrotaxane by removing excess a-CD because we would like to maintain the cw-Azo content as high as possible.
