Spatial derivatives of the fields are evaluated in momentum space using a discrete fast Fourier transform. The crucial issue limiting the speed of the numerical calculation is the time step of the FDTD evolution: Its maximum value is set by the width of the frequency band considered in the problem. A proper choice of f(k) with suitable upper and lower bounds makes it possible to restrict this bandwidth without affecting the physics.
