Compared to other cities in China, each of the selected municipalities had average or greater than average per capita income levels. Approximately 300 respondents in each city were interviewed. Horizon researchers first randomly selected neighborhoods within each city. In Chinese cities, each neighborhood has a neighborhood committee that maintains a list of the households in their community. Horizon researchers randomly selected households from each neighborhood list. The Kish method was then used to create a list of all qualifying adult respondents (18-75 years old) within each household, and one was randomly selected for the interview. Respondents were questioned using face-to-face interviews, for a total sample size of 3,181. The final sample included 50 percent men and 50 percent women, with age ran
    • The Horizon Research Consultancy Group independently sponsored, designed, and conducted this study and made the data available to the authors after the study was completed. Compared to other cities in China, each of the selected municipalities had average or greater than average per capita income levels. Approximately 300 respondents in each city were interviewed. Horizon researchers first randomly selected neighborhoods within each city. In Chinese cities, each neighborhood has a "neighborhood committee" that maintains a list of the households in their community. The final sample included 50 percent men and 50 percent women, with age ranges from 18 to 75 (mean age = 42, standard deviation = 12.4). Across the sample, 9 percent of respondents had a college degree, 19 percent had an associate's degree, 45 percent had a high school education, 23 percent had a middle school education, and 4 percent had an elementary education. A majority (51 percent) of households made 1,000-3,000 yuan a month (approximately US$144- $430). The entire sample was weighted by the nonagricultural population in each city using parameters from the China City Statistical Yearbook 2006 to estimate the views of all urban residents in these 10 cities. The aggregate views of urban Chinese reported here use this weighted dataset. Results that compare responses across individual cities, however, use the unweighted data.
