Impact of multiplanar review of three-dimensional echocardiographic data on management of congenital heart disease
-
This study evaluated the utility of 3DE in 300 patients with congenital heart disease. Datasets were evaluated using the multiplanar review mode, and a significant change in the diagnosis and/or management resulted in 11% of the patients. The biggest impact of 3DE in this study rests in the 3.7% of patients who underwent biventricular surgical repair after evaluation by 3DE

Regression equations for calculation of z scores of cardiac structures in a large cohort of healthy infants, children, and adolescents: An echocardiographic study
-
The sizes of major cardiovascular structures were measured in 782 individuals, aged 1 day to 18 years, without evidence of congenital or acquired heart disease. The large sample size permitted the investigators to formulate regression equations relating each measurement to body size, thereby providing Z-scores for most of the measurements made in echocardiography and allowing clinicians a means by which to distinguish normal from abnormal values

A novel method of expressing left ventricular mass relative to body size in children

LV hypertrophy is usually diagnosed by using the LV mass index, a value which is limited by its dependence on height. Matrix-array 3-dimensional echocardiographic assessment of volumes, mass, and ejection fraction in young pediatric patients with a functional single ventricle: A comparison study with cardiac magnetic resonance
-
The ability to evaluate the size and systolic performance of functional single ventricles with a relatively simple noninvasive modality has been markedly difficult in the past. Using magnetic resonance imaging as the standard of comparison, 3DE using the summation of disks algorithm provides comparable measurements of mass, volume, and ejection fraction in 29 patients with a functional single ventricle. Although newer algorithms for calculation of ventricular volumes are now in use, this study shows the value of 3DE in the assessment and management of this complex and difficult patient group

Assessment of myocardial function in pediatric patients with operated tetralogy of Fallot: Preliminary results with 2D strain echocardiography
-
Assessment of RV function in patients after tetralogy of Fallot repair with severe pulmonary regurgitation is usually done qualitatively by echocardiography or quantitatively by magnetic resonance imaging, and this is especially important in deciding the appropriate timing for pulmonary valve replacement. On the basis of this study of 16 patients shortly before and up to 6 months after pulmonary valve replacement, the utility of strain and strain rate analysis to assess RV function may provide a very useful tool in the management of these patients, though the exact timing of intervention still needs further study
