Note that though the synchronous state is stable for any value of γ Γ, the rate of contraction towards the synchronization manifold is still dependent on the particular choice of γ. Thus, if γ varies continuously in time, the values of γ that minimize the master stability function are more likely to attract the evolution of the receiver onto the synchronous state.
