Brief for the Amici Curiae American Psychological Association et al. at *16, Panetti v. Quarterman 127 S.Ct. 2842 (2007) (hereinafter Associations Brief). In this case, the Supreme Court addressed the competence to face execution of a convicted offender who reportedly was aware that he had committed the murders for which he had been sentenced, that he had been sentenced to death for those murders, and that the state's reported motive for executing him was as punishment for those murders, but who reportedly believed that the state's real motive was to prevent him from preaching.
