    • K. Both experiments aimed at protecting the small junction from the shunting effect of a low-impedance environment, using highly dissipative biasing elements. Although the results of dc current-voltage measurements were consistent with single Cooper-pair effects, they were distorted by Joule heating and other out-of-equilibrium effects in these biasing elements. We avoid the problem of dissipation with an array employing the pure Josephson kinetic inductance.
