Those histories typically focus on the tradition of environmental thought that includes Thoreau, George Perkins Marsh, John Muir, Gifford Pinchot, and Aldo Leopold. Standard histories of environmental politics also define environmentalism as aimed at protecting the environment or human health (rather than, for example, control of physical space or the ability to establish a home). note
-
The narratives of fugitive slaves were not all written by blacks; some narrators had white amanuenses, and some, like the narrative of Charles Ball, may have been only loosely based on the stories of fugitive slaves. Nevertheless, the slave narratives are seminal works in the tradition of black political thought and remain important influences on its development.

Power, Danger, and Control: Slave Women's Perceptions of Wilderness in the Nineteenth Century
-
In contrast to the few other studies of nineteenth-century black environmental thought, I have focused on the works of the black intellectual elite rather than the ideas of ordinary blacks. See Elizabeth Blum, "Power, Danger, and Control: Slave Women's Perceptions of Wilderness in the Nineteenth Century," Women's Studies 31 (2002): 247-66; Dianne Glave, "A Garden So Brilliant with Colors, So Original in its Design," Environmental History 8 (2003): 395-411; Cassandra Johnson and J. M. Bowker, "African-American Wildland Memories," Environmental Ethics 26 (2004): 57-75. The relationship between the elite discourse and black mass opinion in the nineteenth century is beyond the scope of this study, but the texts under consideration here are important for their influence on twentieth-century black public opinion and political ideology.

Other historians have considered African influences on nineteenth century black environmental thought. See Blum, "Power, Danger, and Control"; Sondra Miliner, "Free Grace in the Wilderness" (Ph.D. Diss., Temple University, 1994). Undoubtedly African beliefs persisted in the slave community into the nineteenth century. John Blassingame, The Slave Community, rev. ed. (New York: Oxford University Press, 1979), pp. 1-48; Margaret Creel, A Peculiar People: Slave Religion and Community - Culture Among the Gullahs (New York: New York: University Press, 1988); Robert Thompson, Flash of the Spirit (New York: Random House, 1983); Joseph Holloway, Africanisms in American Culture (Indianapolis: Indiana University Press, 1991). However, their influence on the slave narratives are elusive and difficult to distinguish from European influences. I hope that the question of African survivals will be easier to investigate once we understand the interplay between white American culture and black politics in shaping nineteenth-century black environmental thought.

note
-
Of course, slaves lacked the one critical characteristic of a republic citizen: independence. Dependence was incompatible with republic citizenship under Jeffersonian principles - but for abolitionists, that was all the more reason to abolish slavery and let blacks take their rightful position as independent farmers and citizens.

note
-
This teaching raises the question of a woman's proper relationship to the land. The patriarchal tendency of democratic agrarianism tended to minimize or deny the importance of property rights to women, but it also reinforced the patriarch's duties to the family and the family's collective interest in the land. How these issues played out in black agrarianism call for further exploration.
