    • Mucosal damage and neutropenia are required for Candida albicans dissemination
    • This study nicely demonstrates through the use of an animal model of GI colonization that mucosal damage and neutrophil depletion are necessary and sufficient to trigger the switch from C. albicans colonization to dissemination. Interestingly, dissemination in this model is associated with an organ tropism resembling that in humans with disseminated candidiasis.

    • Th17 cells and IL-17 receptor signaling are essential for mucosal host defense against oral candidiasis
    • An elegant demonstration using mutant mice shows that Th17 cells protect the oral mucosa against invasion by C. albicans to a better extent than Th1 cells. This observation might explain the increased susceptibility of HIV woman to oropharyngeal candidiasis than to vaginal candidiasis.

As a consequence, the increase in size of the C. neoformans capsule seen upon infection confers resistance to ROS as well as antimicrobial peptides and is probably involved in survival.
