This study is the first clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficiency of using barcoded sponges. Count discrepancies are used as a proxy for increased risk of unintentionally retained foreign objects. Although the bar-code system detected more counting discrepancies than the traditional protocol, the system also introduced new technical difficulties and required more time.
