The functional neuroanatomy of maternal love: Mother's response to infant's attachment behaviours
-
In this study, authors compared mothers' neural responses to their own children and other children in two different conditions (stress and play). Regardless of emotional condition, mothers have more pronounced right orbitofrontal cortex (rOFC), periaquaductal grey matter (PAG), anterior insula, dorsal ventrolateral putamen activation when viewing their own child compared with others'. In this study, activation in left OFC was correlated with the intensity of joyful and happy feelings when the mother was viewing their own child, whereas rOFC activation was associated with feeling of anxiety in the mother

Oxytocin attenuates affective evaluations of conditioned faces and amygdala activity

In this study, oxytocin reduced negative ratings of conditioned aversive face stimuli, and this reduction was associated with decreased activity in anterior temporal lobe and ACC.Oxytocin administration has also been shown to decrease amygdala and fusiform gyrus activation to aversive direct-gaze faces (but not to averted-gaze faces)

Oxytocin Shapes the Neural Circuitry of Trust and Trust Adaptation in Humans
-
DOI 10.1016/j.neuron.2008.04.009, PII S0896627308003279

Baumgartner T, Heinrichs M, Vonlanthen A, et al. Oxytocin shapes the neural circuitry of trust and trust adaptation in humans. Neuron 2008; 58:639-650. In this study, oxytocin was reported to prevent normal decrease in trusting behaviour trusting after learning that their trust is breached several times. Breached trust was associated with less activation in amygdala, dorsal striatum and midbrain regions in the patients treated with oxytocin. (Pubitemid 351672358)
