This model is likely relevant for academic settings in other societies.

This study offers a thoughtful evaluation of nurse-led on-treatment review for patients undergoing radiation therapy for head and neck cancer in a British setting. Nurse-led review compares favorably with that conducted by a physician.
4. Goldstein NE, Genden E, Morrison RS. Palliative care for patients with head and neck cancer: 'I would like a quick return to a normal lifestyle'. JAMA 2008; 299:1818-1825. This prominently placed clinical review largely excludes the contribution of professional nurses to care of patients with head and neck cancer except in roles as consultants. Thus, it deserves attention from nurses and their colleagues in order to analyze when opportunities to improve contributions by nurses exist, and how extant contributions may be better understood.
5. Larsson M, Hedelin B, Athlin E. Needing a hand to hold: lived experiences during the trajectory of care for patients with head and neck cancer treated with radiotherapy. Cancer Nurs 2007; 30:324-334. This study reveals complexity and variability in daily life within the experiences of patients undergoing radiation therapy at a clinic in Sweden. The thematic analysis may increase empathy among nurses and expand their skills in anticipatory guidance.
6. Larsson M, Hedelin B, Athlin E. A supportive nursing care clinic: conceptions of patients with head and neck cancer. Eur J Oncol Nurs 2007; 11:49-59. This study reveals, through a qualitative analysis, patients' perspectives on supportive care needs, and how those needs change during the treatment trajectory. Their findings are important in improving patient-centered supportive care and for those considering the development of nurse-led supportive care clinics.

8. Duffy SA, Ronis DL, Valenstein M, et al. Depressive symptoms, smoking, drinking, and quality of life among head and neck cancer patients. Psychosomatics 2007; 48:142-148. This study offers a rigorous analysis of depression and use of alcohol and tobacco among a large sample of patients from five American hospitals, four of which are in the Veteran's Administration. The findings, though perhaps influenced by characteristics of the Veteran's Administration sample, elucidate the interrelated nature of depressive symptoms, drinking, and smoking on quality of life by age and sex.
