Even though, formally, Ising-like lattice models are described as "fixed lattice" models; they have been shown to be able to describe the energetics and thermodynamics associated with large atomic displacements in alloys (Ref.). Thus, the effect of relaxation can be accounted for by using DFT energies of fully relaxed geometries to derive the lateral interaction parameters.

The selection of candidate ECIs for the cluster expansion is based on the concept of maximal cluster. The maximal cluster and subclusters are defined by the principle of a complete set of cluster figures that is found within a circle of a given radius. For details see Refs.

A confidence interval is an estimated range of values with a specified probability of containing the true population value of a parameter (see, e.g., Ref.).

By excluding the configurations in the biggest cell used in this study, i.e., the (3×4) unit cell, we have tested that the critical temperature for Θ=1/4 ML, for a parameter set equivalent to set I, lies in the 100 K interval of Fig. 7. Likewise, including eight to ten more hcp configurations leads to critical temperatures inside of this interval. These results suggest that using bigger units cells and including more hcp configurations would not lead to appreciably different critical temperatures.
