An Mn(III) porphyrinato would require the use of an anion for electroneutrality; this was not pursued in these calculations. The point of this work was to seek an understanding of the diversity of the various spin states, which was done through the analysis of neutral systems. A Mn(III)porphyrinato species would be more electron deficient at the metal center (on average) and this would be expected to strengthen the organophosphonate dative interaction
