    • To produce LDOS maps the integrated density of electronic states at the Fermi energy in each atomic sphere of the first vacuum layer above the island has been calculated. For a clearer picture the values have then been interpolated to produce the η=η (x,y) (where x and y are the in-plane coordinates and η is the local density of states) contour map shown in Figs. 2 2 2.
