    • A compromise required by gene sharing enables survival: implications for evolution of new enzyme activities
    • Many studies have looked at the substrate range for enzymes but few have examined how newly evolved enzyme specificity and activity contribute to cell survival. The present paper shows how a mutated enzyme provided two essential functions to allow a bacterium to survive. Dual function acquisition is proposed to be important during enzyme evolution for new function.
