    • Trifluoroacetic acid was used in the RP-HPLC purification of 2, so in nonbuffered solution zinc(II) acetate was required for zinc(II) complex formation as the basic acetate ions were able to deprotonate the pyridinium compounds isolated. In buffered solution, zinc(II) nitrate can be employed for the formation of the bis[zinc(II)] complexes.
