    • Though the term critical theorist usually refers to theorists outside of education such as Herbert Marcuse, Jiirgen Habermas, and Theodor Adomo, it is used here to refer to contemporary critical theorists who work in education. The use of this shorter term avoids the awkwardness of terms such as critical education theorists or the neologism, critical educationist; it also suggests solidarity and a continuity of tradition with the original critical theorists of the Frankfurt school. As used in this paper, the designation critical theorist refers to contemporary theorists whose work overtly considers issues of power in education, typically through examination of political structures, culture, language, race, class, gender, and sexual orientation
