    • When only nearest-neighbor interactions are included and displacements calculated in a Pythagorean fashion, the complementary base pair interactions modeled by a Lennnard-Jones potential is quartic for small displacements. This leads to a compressive force perpendicular to the chain axis which causes the ladder to collapse when sheared. This is akin to a zero shear modulus for a square lattice
