A very interesting paper reporting antibodies to hantaviruses in ten species of sigmodontine rodents in Paraguay and in an Indian community living in an area without previous HPS confirmed cases. Authors have recovered viral RNA in five of the seropositive rodents from four different species, which could correspond to new hantavirus(es) circulating in the country.

A complete review of pathogenesis, clinical and epidemiologic aspects of hantaviruses disease, with special respect to SNV and ANDV infection in children. The lower incidence of pediatric cases in North America is proposed to be caused by a lower exposure, a lesser genetic resistance of the host, or both factors; a more simple hypothesis suggests the presence of less virulent strains.

This excellent paper performed an exhaustive analysis of the epidemiological, clinical, radiographic, treatment and laboratory aspects of 25 cases in southern Chile. The main clinical differences found in classical HPS include a higher percentage of hemorrhages and of alterations in renal function. The identification of three groups of patients according to a clinical score had a prognostic value.
