In this paper, there is a description of Andes virus isolation from serum. This is the first isolation of hantavirus from a human before the onset of HPS symptoms.

Abstracts of an NIAID International Centers for Tropical Disease research Network, 12th annual meeting. May 13-15, 2003. This abstract contains preliminary information of the natural history of the disease in two household contacts demonstrating Andes virus. Real-time reverse transcriptase PCR in blood cells is the best diagnostic tool for early diagnosis of the infection.

Abstracts of NIAID International Centers for Tropical Disease research Network 12 th annual meeting, May 13-15, 2003. This is a study of 21 patients with a well-known period of exposure who showed a mean incubation period of 18 days; viral load detected in plasma at similar concentrations as patients with SNV and a significantly higher viral load in tracheal secretions. Viral RNA in urine was detected in 10[ref] of the patients.
