Before the unification of Italy sodomy was punished in the Papal States with a life sentence; in the region of Lombardy-Veneto under Austrian rule sodomy was punished with prison from six months to one year; and in the Kingdom of Sardinia (which included Savoy, Piedmont, and Liguria) sodomy was liable to a sentence of ten years in prison. The rest of Italy had adopted the Napoleonic Code, which was silent on the issue of same-sex acts.
