V. N. Safonov, S. M. Barmin, A. A. Sevast'yanov, and P. V. Gel'd, Sov. Phys. Solid State 27, 1732 (1985). Our results remain the same essentially even on samples homogenized at 1100 K (for one week) and quenched to 300 K. It is claimed (Ref.) that this family of compounds cannot be considered "line compounds" and that there could be a small solubility range. In view of this, it is possible that a marginal off stoichiometry may result in local environmental effects, thereby resulting in additional transitions seen in these articles. We may also mention that the sharpness of the transition at 69 K is not attributable to first-order character, as we did not find any hysteresis in the data for warming and cooling cycles.

The paramagnetic behavior is by itself interesting and not understandable. In zero field, the temperature coefficient of resistivity is negative over a wide temperature range above TN, resulting in a broad minimum in ρ (T) around 200 K. The magnitude of MR is large even at temperatures far away from TN, say about -12% for H=100 kOe at 110 K. At 200 K, the corresponding value is found to be about -2%. Similar behavior has been reported by us in some other Gd and Tb compounds. See, for instance, 10.1209/epl/i1998-00149-4;
