It acts as a good guideline for the orientation of treatment for gastrointestinal motility disturbances in the critically ill patient.

This is the first study to create a gastrointestinal failure score to evaluate the gastrointestinal complications in critically adult patients. The gastrointestinal failure score showed a high prognostic value for ICU mortality.
