Habermas (HABERMAS, J. (1994) Citizenship and national identity, in: B. VAN STEENBERGEN (Ed.) The Condition of Citizenship (London, Sage), pp. 20-35) has reminded us of the etymology of the word 'nation', namely the latin natio, which in ancient Rome referred to 'peoples and tribes who were not yet organized into political associations' (p. 22).

Chenyang Li (LI, C. (1999) The Tao Encounters the West (Albany, State University of New York Press), p. 127) has drawn our attention to a story in the People's Daily of 25 August 1993, which reported that an old widow took her two sons to court for failing to look after her and the court ruled in her favour. What Li wants to say is that the idea of filial piety is still important today, but surely the story illustrates equally the importance of rights, in this case the right of the old woman to be looked after by her sons. The ruling of the court could be interpreted as establishing this to be not just a moral right (as part of the notion of li) but a legal right as well.
