Selective trafficking of non-cell-autonomous proteins mediated by NtNCAPP1
-
J.Y. Lee, B.C. Yoo, M.R. Rojas, N. Gomez-Ospina, L.A. Staehelin, and W.J. Lucas Selective trafficking of non-cell-autonomous proteins mediated by NtNCAPP1 Science 299 2003 392 396 The authors describe the isolation and characterization of a receptor protein, NCAPP1, that binds specifically to non-cell-autonomous proteins that are found in the phloem and to the TMV movement protein. NCAPP1 is found in association with the ER. When expressed in transgenic plants, a dominant-negative mutant version of NCAPP1 protein alters the differentiation patterns in leaves and flowers. The transport activity of the TMV movement protein and of CmPP16 is also altered in these plants.

Developmental regulation and significance of KNOX protein trafficking in Arabidopsis
-
J.Y. Kim, Z. Yuan, and D. Jackson Developmental regulation and significance of KNOX protein trafficking in Arabidopsis Development 130 2003 4351 4362 The authors show comprehensively that directional and specific transport of class I homeodomain proteins, such as KN1, STM and KNOTTED-LIKE from Arabidopsis thaliana1 (KNAT1), occurs in the shoot apex. They provide evidence that KN1-related homeodomain proteins that are produced in the shoot apical L1 layer can move into the inner layers and complement an stm mutant.

A broad competence to respond to SHORTROOT revealed by tissue-specific ectopic expression
-
G. Sena, J.W. Jung, and P.N. Benfey A broad competence to respond to SHORTROOT revealed by tissue-specific ectopic expression Development 131 2004 2817 2826 The authors show that tissue-specific factors determine SHR movement. In the root, SHR is normally expressed in the stele and moves into the neighbouring endodermal cells. SHR that is produced in the epidermis, however, cannot move out into cortical cells. In scr plants, which have a mutant cortical/endodermal layer, SHR could move from the epidermis into this mutant layer.

Direct role of a viroid RNA motif in mediating directional RNA trafficking across a specific cellular boundary
-
Y. Qi, T. Pelissier, A. Itaya, E. Hunt, M. Wassenegger, and B. Ding Direct role of a viroid RNA motif in mediating directional RNA trafficking across a specific cellular boundary Plant Cell 16 2004 1741 1752 This report provides the first evidence that the tissue-specific transport of viroids depends on an specific RNA motif. In contrast to wildtype viroid RNA, a mutant viroid RNA could not move across the bundle sheath mesophyll border.

Transitivity-dependent and -independent cell-to-cell movement of RNA silencing
-
C. Himber, P. Dunoyer, G. Moissiard, C. Ritzenthaler, and O. Voinnet Transitivity-dependent and -independent cell-to-cell movement of RNA silencing EMBO J 22 2003 4523 4533 The authors focused on the modes of short- and long-distance transport of silencing signals. They showed that silencing signals are transported across long distances via an amplification or relaying mechanism, which is established by an RNA helicase and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Short-distance transport allows silencing signals to move 10-15 cells away from silenced cells and is independent of an amplification mechanism.

A systemic small RNA signaling system in plants
-
B.C. Yoo, F. Kragler, E. Varkonyi-Gasic, V. Haywood, S. Archer-Evans, Y.M. Lee, T.J. Lough, and W.J. Lucas A systemic small RNA signaling system in plants Plant Cell 16 2004 1979 2000 The authors describe the isolation and characterization of siRNAs and miRNAs that are present in the phloem sap. Microinjection experiments provide evidence that small RNA molecules cannot diffuse from cell to cell, confirming the notion that RNA transport needs specialized proteins to facilitate RNA transport via plasmodesmata. A novel small RNA-binding protein, PRNP1, which mediates cell-to-cell transport of small ssRNAs was isolated from pumpkin.
