In a simple approximation, the eg electron orbital can be described by a combination of 3z2, r2 and x2, y2 type atomic orbitals. The occupied orbital can be described as α|3z2-r 2 > +β|x2-y2 > and the unoccupied orbital can be described as β|3z2- r2 > -α|x2-y2 >, where α and β are constants. Furthermore |3z 2-r2 > can be described by using the hydrogen orbital with |l, 2, m, 0 > and |x2- y2 > can be described by a combination of |l, 2, m, ±2>, where l and m are the angular momentum and the magnetic quantum numbers respectively. g orbital shown in Figure4(b) into a disk-like planar shape. However, such a change is unrealistic as discussed in the text.
