Greenstein A, Ben-Aroya Z, Fass O, et al.: Vulvar vestibulitis syndrome and estrogen dose of oral contraceptive pills. J Sex Med 2007, 4:1679-1683. This study assessed the relationship between estrogen dose of oral contraceptives and prevalence of the sexual pain disorder, vulvar vestibulitis syndrome. In women with vulvar vestibulitis syndrome, significantly more used low-dose estrogen oral contraceptives. Although more research is needed related to the relationship of hormones to vulvar vestibulitis syndrome, hormones are critical for genital structure and function, including minor vestibular glands.

Wimpissinger F, Stifter K, Grin W, Stackl W: The female prostate revisited: perineal ultrasound and biochemical studies of female ejaculate. J Sex Med 2007, 4:1388-1393. In two women who ejaculated during orgasm, ultrasound images revealed gland tissue surrounding the female urethra, urethroscopy revealed an orifice to a duct and biochemical analysis of the ejaculate revealed high levels of prostate-specific antigen and low levels of creatinine and blood urea nitrogen. In these women, evidence of a female prostate gland was suggested.

The symptoms of interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome are urinary urgency, frequency, dyspareunia, nocturia, and pelvic pain. Based on a review of the medical literature, many women with interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome were found to experience dyspareunia. Interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome is one potential cause of dyspareunia that may frequently be overlooked by clinicians.

J Sex Med 2005, 2:819-832. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-institutional comparison of vardenafil versus placebo was performed in 229 couples treated men with ED > 6 months and untreated women partners, Compared with placebo, vardenafil use in men with ED significantly increased total FSFI and sexual desire, subjective arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction domains in untreated women partners. Treatment-related improvement in erectile function was correlated reliably with improvement in women partners' FSFI total and individual domain scores

Panzer C, Wise S, Fantini G, et al, Impact of oral contraceptives on sex hormone-binding globulin and androgen levels: a retrospective study in women with sexual dysfunction. J Sex Med 2006, 3:104-113. Women who take oral contraceptive pills have high values of SHBG (about five times those who have never used them) and are thus likely to have testosterone deficiency. Women who used oral contraceptives and then discontinued had their SHBG levels fall compared with when they were on these pills. The values of SHGB in women who discontinued oral contraceptives, however, were two times higher than in those women who never used oral contraceptives. The possibility of ethinyl estradiol imprinting a new and chronic message to the liver to synthesize higher levels of SHBG needs further investigation
