After the Ross Institute requested more complete records, the mine began collecting better statistics, first for Europeans. The death rate per thousand Europeans from all diseases for April 1929-March 1930 was 22.4, of which nearly half were due to malaria. The first year the mine kept better records for Africans was April 1930-March 1931, when the death rate per thousand was 32.3, compared with 13.2 for Europeans that year.
