    • Microbial diversity in the deep sea and the underexplored
    • First paper on massive parallel 16S rRNA gene surveys. Deep sea samples were studied by targeting the V6 hypervariable region. By comparing against a custom V6 database, it was found that 80% of the sequences were divergent by 10% or more, suggesting an immense diversity present in rare members of the community.
