Acute mortality was not significantly different between ART naïve and experienced patients.

A randomized controlled trial showing that high dose amphotericin B (1 mg/kg per day) is significantly more rapidly fungicidal than standard dose amphotericin B (0.7 mg/kg per day).

The potential of cryptococcal antigen screening to detect early cryptococcal infection in patients initiating ART is shown in a cohort of Cambodian patients. Eighteen per cent of the patients were antigen positive at baseline. One third of cases would have been missed on the day of consultation without screening.

The findings of this study argue for earlier initiation of ART following opportunistic infections, including cryptococcosis. Plasma nevirapine levels, adverse events and efficacy of antiretroviral therapy among HIV-infected patients concurrently receiving nevirapine-based antiretroviral therapy and fluconazole. BMC Infect Dis 2007; 7:14. Although coadministration of fluconazole and nevirapine led to markedly increased trough levels of nevirapine, the combination was safe and well tolerated and virological responses were favourable.

Asymptomatic antigenaemia was detected in 5.8% of patients, and was an independent predictor of mortality.
