Denys D. How new is the new philosophy of psychiatry? Philos Ethics Humanit Med 2007; 2:22. Denys critically discusses the hypothesis exhibited by Banner and Thornton [6*] and promotes the idea that the philosophical questions currently discussed as part of the 'new philosophy of psychiatry' are not really 'new' but have always been seen as an integral part of psychiatry itself. He warns that establishing a 'philosophy of psychiatry' could lead to the separation of psychiatry from philosophical questions and a decreased impact of the philosophical discussion on clinical psychiatry.

Banner NF, Thornton T. The new philosophy of psychiatry: its (recent) past, present and future: a review of the Oxford University Press series International Perspectives in Philosophy and Psychiatry. Philos Ethics Humanit Med 2007; 2:9. Banner and Thornton argue that a new (i.e. not based on the phenomenological-existential and the continental tradition) philosophy of psychiatry mainly based on analytic philosophy has been recently forming and is already flourishing. The authors regard this development as a novel and welcome addition to philosophy and mental heath care.
