Guanylins administered parenterally and luminally increased the rate of DBS, likely mediated by melatonin and cholinergic neurons.

Akiba Y, Mizumori M, Guth PH, et al. Duodenal brush border intestinal alkaline phosphatase activity affects bicarbonate secretion in rats. Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol 2007; 293:G1223-G1233. IAP activity is determined by the rate of bicarbonate secretion and the luminal pH. Inhibiting IAP activity increases DBS. ATP is released into the duodenal lumen, where it is hydrolyzed by IAP activity, which in turn is dependent on local pH. As luminal ATP increases DBS via P2 receptors, IAP may serve as a surface pH sensor.
