Several of the capsid proteins in each infectious Qb particle possess a large C-terminal extension domain used to penetrate E. coli (K. Weber, W. Konigsberg, Proteins of the RNA phages, in RNA phages, in: N.D. Zinder (Ed.), Cold Springs Harbor Laboratory Press, New York, 1975, p. 51-84), suggesting that exogenous protein domains can be introduced into virus-like particles without compromising particle stability.
