    • We note that ε (iξ) can be obtained by analytic continuation from the value ε (ω) at real frequency ω, typically done by Kramers-Kronig analysis (and likewise for the reflection coefficient). However, ε (iξ) has physical meaning on its own, which seems not commonly known in this context, though it is a standard result of linear response theory. Just as the electric displacement is D (t) = ε (ω) E0 e-iωt when the driving electric field oscillates sinusoidally as E (t) = E0 e-iωt, the displacement is D (t) = ε (iξ) E0 eξt when the driving field grows exponentially as E (t) = E0 eξt [see, for instance, Elsevier, New York.
